President Donald Trump is on the verge of scoring a major victory for his administration, but congressional Republicans claim that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is stalling a key vote in the House of Representatives that would make that victory a reality.
Trump kept a campaign promise to renegotiate the unfair NAFTA trade deal and replace it with a better, fairer trade deal with Mexico and Canada.
The United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal has garnered unprecedented bipartisan support in the House, but according to Pelosi, a couple of labor wrinkles need to be ironed out before the measure is voted on.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), who calls the Republican claims against Pelosi “a little pathetic, has joined the growing number of Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Stephanie Murphy, in supporting Trump’s trade deal.
The Floridian caught up to Rep. Wasserman Schultz at the Trump rally in Sunrise, Florida, where the veteran legislator echoed Speaker Pelosi’s remarks that House Democrats were “negotiating and working” with United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer about “getting the language” right.
Wasserman Schultz then dressed-down the one-time Democratic Party-supported NAFTA trade deal, saying that a “NAFTA 2.o” would not be an acceptable measure.
“The speaker sent a memo the other day saying that they are getting very close,” said Wasserman Schultz “So, I’m feeling pretty good about it, but important things was making sure that we had labor and environmental standards, enforcement measures, and also just make sure that we don’t get NAFTA, you know NAFTA 2.0 and not much difference in that regard.
Wasserman Schultz added that she felt “good about the progress that has been made” so far, adding that even though “it’s looking good,” there was still “a little ways to go” to get the language she and other Democrats want in the deal.
An up or down vote on the USMCA, if Pelosi pushes it through, could come by the end of the year.
