Wasserman Schultz dismisses fmr ICE director testimony as "bigoted"

Share

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) accused former ICE Director Tom Homan as being “bigoted” and that his testimony during a hearing of The House Oversight Civil Rights and Civil Liberties subcommittee over why the Trump administration decided to stop immigrants from seeking deferment for the immigration cases, should “not be accepted as accurate testimony.”

Homan, who worked under the Obama administration, was all-but filibustered by House Democrats, as they directed their questions to the other individuals on the panel, including two immigrants seeking the deferment, and not Mr. Homan.

Rep. Wasserman Schultz started her allotted 5 minutes by making the “bigoted” statement about Homan, before directing her questions to the other panelists.

“I think it’s important to really make sure that the jingoistic, bigoted testimony of Mr. Homan is called out as nearly completely untrue, as being an outrage, and as a former official directing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, he should know better,” she said.

“What did I say was inaccurate” interrupted Homan before being quieted by Wasserman Schultz and then Rep. Raskin stepped into qualm the situation down.

“I just think it’s important that it’s not accepted as accurate testimony,” she said.

She went on to question other witnesses on the panel but did not ask anything of Homan.

Members of “The Squad,” Reps Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all also avoided engaging Homan.

Tlaib made an opening remark against Homan, but directed her questions away from him.

The reason why these Democratic lawmakers avoided Homan could be because of his July testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee where the former acting director of ICE “shut down” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez by providing irrefutable facts about family separation of illegal immigrants at the border.

Ocasio-Cortez was visibly taken back by Homan’s responses.
