Rubio called "absolute coward" over impeachment remark

Share

Former CNN Anchor Soledad O'Brien took issue with what Sen. Marco Rubio (R) said during an interview with reporters on Capitol Hill about impeaching President Donald Trump, calling the junior senator an "absolute coward."

Rubio told reporters that it was quite "possible to do something that is wrong and not be an impeachable offense," adding that the 'impeachment' term has a lost its luster because of how Democrats have been overusing it.

"It is possible to do something that is wrong and not be an impeachable offense and people are throwing that term around so loosely it's lost all meaning," said Rubio.

Does Rubio have a point?

Yes, because for Trump to be impeached out of office, he must first be "convicted" of the crime he is alleged to have committed.

"The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” (U.S. Constitution, Article II, section 4)

But like many Republicans like Rubio have stated, impeaching the president is solely motivated by politics.

According to the Constitutional Rights Foundation, "The impeachment process is political in nature, not criminal. Congress has no power to impose criminal penalties on impeached officials."

Remember, two of other U.S. Presidents have been impeached, but were not removed from office.
