Scott urges Amazon to drop "unsafe" & "banned" products

The sunshine state is shining a light on a pressing matter, but that also entails going head-to-head with Amazon.

In a report by the Wall Street Journal, it informed that thousands of unsafe, banned and even deceptive products were being sold through Amazon.

In response, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) has directed a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, urging him and the company to implement the important safety measure of his own Promoting Responsibility in Markets and E-Retailers (PRIME) Act of 2019, which would increase transparency for American consumers.

In the letter, Senator Scott argues that “the safety of American families” is one of his top priorities as a sunshine state senator, and he expresses that the recent report from the Wall Street Journal is both alarming and troubling because “American consumers are being misled because poor oversight has opened Amazon’s market to millions of third-party sellers.”

He asserts that “this is unacceptable.”

In explaining his PRIME Act of 2019, Senator Scott details that his “bill would require online retailers to list the country of origin for each product they sell.” He adds that “Americans have a right to know where the products they buy online are made.” With this, it “will not only give consumers more information to make valuable decisions, but it will also protect them against fraudulent, deceptive and unsafe products.”

Scott concludes the letter by urging “Amazon to be a leader in public safety by immediately providing transparency about the products sold on your platform and list where each product is made. This would greatly benefit consumers and demonstrate Amazon’s commitment to safety.”
