After the tragic mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, President Donald Trump is calling for “red flag” laws to be enacted to prevent future shootings like the ones that occurred this past weekend.
"We must make sure that those judged to pose a grave risk to public safety do not have access to firearms and that if they do those firearms can be taken through rapid due process," Trump said. "That is why I have called for red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders."
In response to Kyle Petty, whose daughter was killed during the Marjorie Stoneman Douglass High School shooting in 2018, Sen. Marco Rubio (R) echoed Trump’s call for “red flag laws.”
“We can still do more,” stated Rubio “Let’s take up and pass our bi-partisan #RedFlagLaws so we can find & stop these killers & terrorists before they act.”
The Senate is already moving forward on introducing a “red flag” bill, as South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) has announced that he would spearhead a bipartisan measure that encourages states to enact such laws.
“Red flag laws allow law enforcement, family members and other concerned parties to petition a judge to confiscate guns from individuals who may cause harm to themselves or others. It's a way of acting upon warning signs, "red flags," in order to prevent potential gun violence.”-USA Today
