DeSantis Asks Trump for More Hurricane Relief Funding

The state of Florida is still feeling the destruction caused after Hurricane Irma on a financial level and on a societal level.

With that, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced this week that the threshold was met for increased federal cost share for Hurricane Irma.

In turn, the Governor admits that there’s still more work to be done. And, that entails asking the federal government for more funding to ensure that the state of Florida properly recovers.

In a statement, Governor DeSantis detailed that “every single day, my administration has fought to make hurricane recovery a top priority, and today we’re able to take another step forward for Florida communities impacted by recent hurricanes.”

In addition, Governor DeSantis noted that “our state has been devastated by Hurricanes Michael and Irma these past two years, but by working together, we’re rebuilding every community stronger than before.”

He commented that he’s “proud of the work we’ve already accomplished on Hurricane recovery statewide, and I look forward to working closely with President Trump to implement this increased federal cost share.”

DeSantis concluded that “as we near the second anniversary of Hurricane Irma’s landfall, I’m grateful to our President for his support of Florida’s long-term recovery.”

The President and Governor DeSantis have a good, working relationships, and the Florida Governor has directed a former letter to President Trump requesting the increase in the federal cost share. This is expected to save the state and local governments more than $160 million.  

Most importantly, the letter asserted that it “will also assist Florida in our ongoing response to more recently declared disasters, like Hurricane Michael, which continues to take a substantial financial toll.”
