Rep. Omar Slams Trump in Scathing Op-Ed

Share

Over the weekend, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (D) slammed President Trump in an op-ed for the New York Times.

Rep. Omar, who was recently embroiled in a contentious war of words with the President along with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D), commented on the President’s choice of words and the current political atmosphere.

Since the President’s controversial tweet telling the four congresswomen to “go back,” the President’s words have been condemned by the House.

However, as lawmakers have pushed for impeachment, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) has downplayed the move, arguing that “we will proceed when we have what we need to proceed – not one day sooner.”

In the op-ed, Omar writes that “it is not enough to condemn Trump’s racism.”

She options that “the only way to push back is to be unequivocal about our values.”

Furthermore, Rep. Omar explained that “throughout history, demagogues have used state power to target minority communities and political enemies, often culminating in state violence.”

Thus, she expressed that “today, we face that threat in our own country, where the president of the United States is using the influence of our highest office to mount racist attacks on communities across the land.”

Rep. Omar detailed that the President has intentionally divided the country through his rhetoric, which she feels has made political discussions more difficult.

She concluded that “if working Americans are too busy fighting with one another, we will never address the very real and deep problems our country faces – from climate change to soaring inequality to lack of quality affordable health care.”

In turn, she asserted that “it’s time to respond with the kind of conviction that has made America great before.”

The President has maintained his attacks on Democrats and the four congresswomen.

On the subject of Democrats pursuing “impeachment nonsense,” the President has said that “these people are clowns” and that “the Democrats are being laughed at all over the world.”
