To most Americans like Sens. Rick Scott (R) and Marco Rubio (R), the Holocaust that occurred at the hands of Nazi Germany is undeniable, but not to one Florida educator.
William Latson, now the former principal of Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, was not fired from his post for making a controversial and disrespectful Holocaust comment, but reassigned within the school district.
"I have been reassigned to the district office due to a statement that was not accurately relayed to the newspaper by one of our parents. It is unfortunate that someone can make a false statement and do so anonymously and it holds credibility but that is the world we live in."- William Latson (CBS)
"I can't say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in a position to do so as a school district employee," said Latson. "Not everyone believes the Holocaust happened."
Latson’s remark was met with a call for his firing by Sen. Rick Scott, who said that there was “no excuse for anti-Semitism of any kind.”
"There is no excuse for what he expressed. There is no excuse for holocaust denial,” noted Scott. “There is no excuse for anti-Semitism of any kind."
While Sen. Rubio did not call for Latson’s firing, he tweeted that he would be filing legislation, the “Never Again Education Act,” a bill that would “help states obtain resources” so that students like those in Spanish River High School learn the “historical fact that Nazi Germany systematically” murder of 6 million Jews during WWII.
