Rooney votes against funding Planned Parenthood

The Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 2740, a wide-ranging appropriations funding bill to fund the federal government, and special interests like Planned Parenthood.

The 226-203 vote came down along political party lines, as Republicans scoffed at the billions of dollars that exceeded existing spending caps, not to mention the $1 trillion in “discretionary spending” language that was inserted into the bill.

Florida's entire Republican Congressional House Caucus, including Rep. Ted Yoho, Matt Gaetz, Brian Mast, and Francis Rooney, all voted against the measure.

According to Florida Congressman Francis Rooney (R), Democrats inserted language into the bill that “explicitly prohibit any funding for securing the southern border.”

“Even with all this excessive spending, democrats inserted language to explicitly prohibit any funding for securing our southern border – which seems to be the only area where they have found a passion for spending constraints, said Rooney “Congress has a responsibility to address its spending addiction in a serious manner, not by playing politics with border security.”

Rooney outlined some of the focal point measures that prevented him and his Republican colleagues from voting in favor of the bill because it:

  • Prohibits funding for a border wall or barriers of any type
  • Forces the Administration to provide grants to Planned Parenthood clinics
  • Prohibits implementation of the Administration’s expanded Mexico City policy
  • Provides $100 Million for flawed Obamacare Navigator grants

The bill also repealed the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force. This is the first time in 18 years that the House passed a repeal of the 2001 bill.
