If the 2020 election didn’t already have everyone’s attention, the sunshine state is about to see a congressional rematch in South Florida.
A source close to Maria Elvira Salazar (R), who lost the congressional district 27 race to Rep. Donna Shalala (D) in the 2018 midterm elections, says that Elvira Salazar will be challenging Shalala in the upcoming 2020 election.
It was rumored that Maria Elvira Salazar would be making a bid for a state house seat, but that’s not the case.
With mounting criticism aimed at the Democratic party for espousing what some perceive as socialist views, the congressional race between Maria Elvira Salazar and Donna Shalala would be a closely watched race because of how important the sunshine state is in the upcoming election.
After District 27’s Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R) announced that she would be retiring and not running for reelection, the stage was set for Shalala and Salazar.
In the end, Shalala won with 51.8% of the vote, turning the district blue.
However, in an election cycle that has largely seen Republicans denouncing what they feel is a growing socialist platform within the Democratic party, South Florida voters largely comprised of Cuban-Americans and Venezuelan-Americans will be involved in dictating the outcome.
