As tension rises in the border security debate between Republicans and Democrats, the problem becomes an even bigger priority in the upcoming 2020 Presidential election. And, much like his platform in the 2016 Presidential election, President Trump is making a push for immigration reform.
Commenting on the subject over the weekend in Sunday Morning Futures, President Trump noted the threat the U.S. faces by “having the weakest immigration laws anywhere in the world by far.”
He further explained that “we have catch and release, and we have chain migration, and visa lottery. We have things that nobody in their right mind would have.” President Trump assured that “we’re trying to get rid of them,” but “the Democrats won’t do it.”
In response, the Democratic presidential candidates have slammed the President and Republicans while highlighting their thoughts on the subject by presenting their own immigration policies that they would implement should they win the presidency.
President Trump explained that “when they used to separate children, which was done during the Obama administration, with Bush… with everybody, far fewer people would come, and we’ve been on a humane basis.”
Saying that “it was pretty bad,” the President further expressed that “we got out and we stop the separation. The problem is you have ten types more people coming up with their families” before asserting that “it’s like Disneyland now.”
In recent weeks, the President has slammed Colombian President Ivan Duque, saying that not only has Duque not helped lower problems with immigration but that he has actually contributed to criminals crossing the border with the intent of committing crimes in the United States. For this, the President received criticism from both sides of the aisle. However, the President maintains his hardline stance on the issue and has actively called for Democrats’ support on tackling immigration reform.
