Scott: Drug Trafficking "not only a Colombian problem"

Share

In an op-ed for the Miami Herald, Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R) details that Colombian President Ivan Duque sees that his country wants to usher in a new era of conservatism.

As growing tension within the United States sees Democratic Socialism permeating through the Democratic party, the effects of socialism in countries like Venezuela is causing countries to outright reject the political ideology and the oppression that it brings.

In the opinion posting, the former Governor of Florida recounts that he attended Duque’s inauguration,  and later met with Duque “to discuss the issue of narco-trafficking and our shared goal of freedom and democracy in Venezuela.”

Senator Scott says that since being inaugurated, “President Duque has taken strong measures to support freedom and democracy in latin America” and that he also wants to “improve Colombia’s economy, and continue the progress made in tackling the drug trafficking problem.”

However, although there’s been an effective measure in combating the country’s drug issue, Senator Scott asserts that “there is still more to do.” But, more importantly, “the drug problem is not only a Colombian problem.”

In linking how the United States must play its part in the matter, Scott explains that “because of Florida’s location, the state remains one of the main sites for international drug trafficking and money laundering.”

As Governor, Scott reminds constituents that his administration “took significant action to support Florida communities and families battling the national opioid epidemic, including investing more than $65 million in 2018 and directing the state to immediately draw down more than $27 million in federal grant funding in 2017.”

In turn, the freshman senator calls for the countries to continue combating the problem, expressing “that Colombia and the United States can work together so we can finally see a lasting reduction in this decades-old problem.
