Brenda Snipes rescinds resignation, will fight suspension

"After a series of inexcusable actions, it's clear that there needs to be an immediate change in Broward County and taxpayers should no longer be burdened by paying a salary for a supervisor of elections who has already announced resignation.”

This is the statement Florida Governor Rick Scott made before suspending without pay Broward’s Supervisor of Election, Dr. Brenda Snipes.

Scott replaced her with his long-time friend Peter Antonacci, who Scott says will be focused on conducting free and fair elections in Florida’s second most populous county.

Shortly after he suspension, Snipes’ in-house attorney stated that they would be “"fighting this to the very end,” opening the door to a possible lawsuit over her boss’s firing.

With less than two months before leaving his post as governor, it was widely suspected that Rick Scott would leave the task of replacing Snipes to Governor-elect Ron DeSantis.

That was obviously not the case.

Scott’s actions make sense considering that the fiasco in Broward County occurred during his watch.

Before arriving to his decision to name Antonacci as Snipes’ replacement, Scott had several Republicans names to choose from, many of those applicants were residents of Broward.

Several names were said to be considered but one Hollywood Attorney, who is part of the local Broward Republicans apparatus was quickly dismissed due to his past “weak and ineffectual” leadership, and his alleged involvement of selling Republicans emails to Democrats.

Scott’s executive office and senatorial campaign were made aware of this person’s actions, and quickly axed his application.

Antonacci is expected to serve out Snipes’ remaining two years, leaving the post up for grabs in 2020.

With Broward Democrats having a huge and insurmountable lead over Republicans in voter registration countywide, it is most likely that the Broward SOE job will land in Democratic hands come the 2020 general election.
