In order to counter the NRA’s support of candidates that believe in gun rights, the gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety announced this week that they’re putting $2 million into stateworld elections in the sunshine state to help elect Democrats that endorse gun control measures.
The announcement came the same day their founder, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, concluded a three-day event consisting of political stops in South Florida.
In the announcement, they mentioned that the candidates they will specifically be backing are Sean Shaw for Attorney General, Andrew Gillum for Governor and Nikki Fried for Agricultural Commissioner among others.
They explained that “These candidates are running on platforms that include strengthening gun-safety laws in the Sunshine State, while their opponents are beholden to the gun lobby’s extreme ‘guns everywhere’ agenda.”
The president of Everytown for Gun Safety, John Feinblatt, explained in a statement that “In Florida, this election is about gun safety — not political partisanship. The era of the NRA calling the shots is over.”
Calling the candidates they’re supporting “gun sense candidates,” the organization also endorsed Senator Bill Nelson in his reelection bid against Florida Governor Rick Scott.
However, they have also contributed $200,000 to the leadership political action committee, which is run by state senator Bill Galvano. The committee works for school safety and the gun regulation law that passed after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting.
