DeSantis: Gillum wants to "force" single-payer healthcare

Share

With Florida being the 3rd most populous state, and having a huge retiree population, healthcare is a big deal for voters this election cycle.

The hotly contested gubernatorial race between Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis and Democratic Mayor Andrew Gillum could boil down to which candidate’s healthcare initiative is the most attractive to voters.

DeSantis has called Gillum’s “Medicare for all” nothing more than socialized medicine, or “Gillum’s socialism.”

During a rally in West Miami with Senator Marco Rubio and his Lt. pick, state Rep. Jeanette Nunez, DeSantis continued his healthcare critique of Gillum, saying that he wants a complete government takeover of healthcare, which is otherwise known as a single-payer system.

“People in Florida want to have their healthcare protected. My opponent Andrew Gillum, he wants to take everyone’s healthcare and force everyone on a government, single- payer plan. So, if you are on Medicare, you would go on single-payer even though you earned those benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, which you are earning, that would be illegal, and you would be dumped on a government system. That will bankrupt us and lead to worse care for our seniors and so many other Floridians.”-Ron DeSantis

Gillum doesn’t back down from his support for Bernie Sanders model of “Medicare for all,” and “healthcare for all.”

According to his campaign website, Gillum doubled-down on the Sanders plan, stating that he “believes that Senator Sanders’ Medicare for All plan will help lower costs and expand coverage to more Floridians.”

Gillum also intends to “expand Medicaid and strengthen” the already failing Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

“As Governor, Andrew will work to expand Medicaid and strengthen the Affordable Care Act.”-Gillum Website

Here the main points in Gillum’s entire healthcare position:

  • -Andrew believes that healthcare should be a fundamental right, not a privilege.
  • -Andrew believes that Senator Sanders’ Medicare for All plan will help lower costs and expand coverage to more Floridians.
  • -Gillum has promised to fight the new health care premium increases that are a result of President Trump, Rick Scott and Congressional Republicans trying to attack Obamacare.
  • -The Trump Health Care Plan is disastrous, and Governor Rick Scott’s complicity in the development of this plan is unacceptable.
  • - Trumpcare is nothing more than a tax cut for millionaires and a rise in costs for everyone else. Hundreds of thousands of seniors would pay more for coverage and women who rely on Planned Parenthood will be denied coverage. Nearly 1.8 million Floridians stand to lose their healthcare by 2026 and it slashes Medicaid and Medicare.
  • -Florida never received the opportunity to benefit from the full impact of the Affordable Care Act due to Governor Scott’s refusal to extend Medicaid to over 1 million Floridians.
  • - As Governor, Andrew will work to expand Medicaid and strengthen the Affordable Care Act.

Do Americans really want a single-payer healthcare system?
