The gun issue could help frame Florida's governor's race

With guns being a target (pun intended) in the 2018 mid-term elections, Democrats like Florida gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum, appear to be gunning (another intended pun) for an all-out ban on them.

Gillum won’t say he is against guns, instead he’s doubling-down on his belief that assault weapons or rifles, including large capacity magazines, should be banned.

“In the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy, Andrew led the charge for more common sense gun safety policies including a ban on assault weapons, large capacity magazines, and bump stocks; strengthening and requiring universal background checks for all gun sales; closing private sale loopholes; restricting gun access for the mentally ill and known foreign and domestic terrorists; closing the “Boyfriend Loophole” and prohibiting gun possession for those with felony and misdemeanor domestic violence and stalking convictions; and banning the purchase and possession of armor piercing bullets.”-Gillum campaign website

On the other hand, Gillum’s opponent, A-rated Ron DeSantis, who is fully backed by the NRA and other gun lobby organizations, does not believe in any form of gun ban.

Pro-gun advocates argue that once you begin to ban a certain type of gun or accessory, the precedent will be set to possibly ban other guns or even ammunition.

Will anti-gun advocates now focus on restricting ammunition if a gun ban is not put in place?

Wasserman Schultz has recently penned a bill that would require background checks to buy any form of ammunition.

“I really think it’s important to underscore that without bullets a gun is just a hunk of useless metal, and a would-be killer lacks the means to actually kill or maim.”- Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) –Sun-Sentinel
