The Democrats’ Blue Gala was held in Coral Gables, and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum gave a speech that many attendees thought was rousing. This comes at a time when Gillum is polling higher than his opponent, Congressman Ron DeSantis.

Introduced by Tom Steyer, a Democratic mega-donor who’s been on a campaign to impeach President Trump, Steyer praised Gillum by saying that Gillum “is talking straightforwardly and bravely on the issues and not ducking.”

And, taking the stage, Gillum informed that, with this election, “We have an opportunity to do something we haven’t done in 20 years.”

He added that “We have an opportunity to flip this state blue. And, by the way, when we flip this state blue in 2018, we’re going to flip this country blue in 2020. And it’s going to start right here in the state of Florida.”

However, citing polls that have him in the lead over his Republican opponent, Gillum disregarded the polls, saying that “The only poll that matters is the one on Election Day, which means we’ve gotta get out there, we’ve gotta organize, we’ve gotta vote. And we’ve gotta vote like our lives depend on it.”

Congressman DeSantis argues that Gillum’s policies are too radical and that Floridians will reject him in November, but Gillum assures that “We’ve got the firepower and the energy and the momentum to get this thing done.”
