Florida Senate President Ben Albritton announced he's a 'No' on Amendment 3, citing its impact on the state's rural community in a statement shared by the Florida's Sheriff's Association this week.

"As a native of Florida's heartland, our rural communities are near and dear to my heart. It's who I am," Albritton wrote. "Amendment 3 would eliminate up to 30% of resources for Florida's rural counties, gutting essential support for our law enforcement, emergency response services and critical infrastructure."

"During my time in the Florida Legislature, I've voted for billions of dollars in tax cuts for Florida families, and I'll keep fighting to make sure that Floridians will keep more of what they earn. Tax relief shouldn't fall hardest on the communities least able to absorb it," Albritton continued.

While against it, Albritton welcomed the idea of a plan in the future.

"The Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission is scheduled to convene next year, presenting an ideal opportunity to design property tax reform and create a solution that is meaningful, reasonable and balanced," Albritton said.

Amendment 3 would increase the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028 if approved by 60% of voters on the Nov. 3 ballot. According to polling, the measure falls short of that mark to pass.

Albritton is the latest Republican to come out against Amendment 3, joining Sen. Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples). Passiodmo preceded Albritton as Senate President from 2018 to 2020.

Ironically, both Albritton and Passidomo voted in favor of putting the measure on the ballot in the Legislature. The vote was 30-9 in the Senate earlier this year.

Their opposition is also a break from party ranks.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has expressed his support, alongside the Republican Party of Florida. Albritton and Passidomo join the Florida Democratic Party against it.
