Vice President (VP) JD Vance and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud announced the recovery of $2.2 billion in taxpayer funds as part of a nationwide crackdown on Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare fraud.
“We’re actually making sure that the people receiving Obamacare subsidies are actually entitled to receive them,” VP Vance said during a press conference on the matter.
The Biden Administration's Obamacare Failure
According to VP Vance, the former Biden administration fostered rampant fraud in the Obamacare enrollment system by incentivizing insurance brokerages to sign people up while lessening eligibility requirements.
“You have a system where on the one hand, brokers are paid money to feed patients into the system, while on the other hand, the government isn’t even checking whether the people enrolled are actually eligible for the program,” Vance argued.
During the conference, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Administrator, also critiqued the previous administration’s relaxed policy on Obamacare enrollment, citing the more than two-fold increase in enrollees during the COVID-19 era.
760,000 Enrollees Will Be Removed; Additional Verification For Thousands
Additionally, Vance announced that the Trump administration will stop Obamacare enrollment for roughly 760,000 individuals believed to have enrolled fraudulently.
It will also add additional verification for about 419,000 enrollees to ensure they meet both the income threshold and legal status requirements needed to receive Obamacare benefits.
Fraud Ring Enrolled People Who Didn't Exist
VP Vance shared the discovery of a fraud ring that enrolled thousands of people, including individuals who didn’t exist.
“In one case, we found a fraud ring that had 40 brokerage agents who had funneled 50,000 people into the Obamacare system fraudulently. Now, some of those people were probably legitimate; most of those people were not eligible, – either they didn’t meet the citizenship or the income requirements –, many of those people didn’t even exist,” Vance said.
