New York City’s (NYC) proposed city-owned grocery stores and Mayor Zohran Mamdani are facing criticism from several Florida lawmakers after the Mamdani administration announced regulations requiring potential "library card-esque" verification to prevent potential abuse of the program.
Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), and Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) called out Mayor Mamdani’s plans to require identification or residency verification to access discounted goods in the proposed “N.Y.C. Groceries” stores across the five boroughs despite opposition to voter ID requirements.
Mamdani Confirms Plans To Ensure New Yorkers Don't Abuse The Program
The criticism stems from Mayor Mamdani’s response to a reporter about how his administration will prevent people from taking advantage of the program’s 30% discount on essential grocery items.
“Our RFP [Request for Proposals] makes very clear that this is a program for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a program for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling," Mayor Mamdani affirmed during the press conference regarding the stores.
New York City Economic Development Corporation Interim President and CEO Jeanny Pak subsequently confirmed that the administration will do so by implementing residency verification and purchase limits.
"We are looking to make sure that we target New Yorkers, whether it be at sort of a library card-esque thing, and also we manage who's buying and that it's focused on everyday New Yorkers," Pak said.
Backlash From FL Lawmakers
“… it’s hypocritical! [Mayor] Mamdani’s going to require an ID check for his grocery stores, but thinks it’s racist to require one for federal elections?!? We HAVE to pass the SAVE America Act to end this corruption!” Sen. Scott wrote on X, deeming the plans ironic.
“Mamdani is going to make you show ID to shop at his government grocery stores. Ask him to show ID to vote and suddenly it's racist and voter suppression,” Rep. Steube remarked, calling out the administration's double standards.
“Identification required to keep nonresidents out of NYC government-run grocery stores… Setting aside my disagreement with Mamdani’s Marxist-Marts, this ID requirement is a great idea!” Sen. Moody affirmed. “He should do it for elections too!!!”
