Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a Cuban dissident artist and musician, arrived in Miami, Fla., after being released from a five-year prison sentence on the condition that he go into exile.
Alcántara’s arrival came as a surprise, as the activist’s whereabouts were unknown since his term’s end on July 9, 2026.
The last known update of the 38-year-old artist before his arrival was on July 7, 2026, when he was reportedly transferred from a prison to a state security force facility.
Alcántara Stands Firm On The Mission For A Free Cuba
“First of all, we’re going to keep working for a free Cuba, and we won’t lose faith. We’re going to keep working for a free Cuba, as long as we can,” Alcántara told reporters upon his arrival.
“Help us construct a Cuba that can be free, because one minute of the work is one minute less under dictatorship,” the activist affirmed, pleading for assistance from the U.S. government and the Cuban diaspora across the world.
The Activist's Arrest During the J11 Mass Demonstrations
On July 11, 2021, Alcántara was detained as he was leaving his home to participate in the mass demonstration against the Communist regime of the Caribbean Island. This day is widely recognized and celebrated in South Florida.
In 2022, a court sentenced him to five years in prison for public disorder, contempt, and for insulting national symbols.
Miami-based non-profit organization Cubalex filed a habeas corpus petition on behalf of the San-Isidro movement cofounder on July 20, 2026.

"I am thankful he is now safe here in the United States. It is a privilege to welcome him as hero and to stand in steadfast solidarity with the Cuban people in their struggle for freedom. We continue to demand the release of Maykel “Osorbo” Castillo Pérez and all political prisoners, that basic rights to expression, assembly, and belief are respected, and that free, fair, and multiparty elections are scheduled,” Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (R-Fla.), stated.
