In a recent appearance on Fox Business's Varney & Co., Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) suggested that Democrats are showing their true colors by embracing socialism.

The Context

Substitute host David Asman played a clip from a recent interview with conservative pundit Joel Pollak, where he suggested that the Democrats' embrace of socialism is "changing the contours of the presidential primary for Democrats in 2028."

Asman then asked Rep. Donalds if Democrats are now "tethered" to socialism and thus would lose the anti-socialist Democrats.

Donalds Says It's Just Open Now

"They are tethered to it," Rep. Donalds answered, "but let's be clear: This has been their position the entire time. This is not new. Look what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and the Democrats were doing when they were in charge, when they had full control of this country; they were moving us down this line. This is the Democrat Party. It's not a tether, it's a reality."

The Florida congressman noted that Democrats embrace not only socialism, but also open borders and government-run healthcare, which he says is what "Obamacare was designed to do."

"They want an energy system that does not respond to the needs of this country. That is why they want solar panels and windmills, and they ignore nuclear and natural gas," Donalds continued. "This has been the state of play for Democrat policy for a long, long time. It's just now they are coming out of the closet."

2021 Poll Backs Him Up

An August 2021 poll conducted by Fox News found that 59% of registered Democratic voters who participated held a positive view of socialism, compared to 49% of Democrats who felt the same about capitalism.

Given the recent success of self-identified socialists in American elections, Donalds' words could be ringing truer than expected.
