With the news that articles of impeachment had been written against the President, those supporting his removal from office rejoiced. Then, with the House set on voting on the articles, it only added fuel to the fire.
However, in a turn of events, a Democrat has made a move that has left some confused and others surprised.
Freshman Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D), who’s strongly opposed the President’s impeachment, is expected to leave the Democratic party and join the Republican party. In response, he’s received criticism from Democrats in his home state of New Jersey.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) slammed Van Drew, saying that he is “willing to enable Donald Trump just to try to salvage his own election.”
Furthermore, he commented that “betraying our values by siding with Donald Trump is the final straw and made it impossible for him to continue being supported by our party, as grassroots, activists, local party leaders in his district, and I have made clear in recent weeks.”
As well, Murphy noted that “this party switch is cynical and desperate, and I am confident that a Democrats who share the values and priorities of our Democratic Party will hold this seat.”
In October, Van Drew was one of two Democrats that voted against formalizing an impeachment inquiry, and he also announced in early December that he would be voting against the articles of impeachment.
The Floridian recently spoke To Van Drew where he and his tailored blue suite and slick silver shoes echoed his anti-Impeachment rhetoric.
