Rep. Juan Porras (R-Miami) is sounding the alarm on the rise of socialism in America after Democratic Socialist candidates made their presence felt across the nation in this week's general elections, including in the nation's largest city.

"Socialism is rising in America. You can see it in New York City with politicians like Zohran Mamdani pushing radical ideas that hurt working families," Porras wrote. "That same movement is trying to spread across the country."

Zohran Mamdani, a political unknown to many just 12 months ago, trounced Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa with over 1 million votes (50.4%) to become the next mayor of the Big Apple.

Other Democratic Socialist candidates for Mayor like Katie Wilson in Seattle are currently in races too close to call as of Wednesday.

But Rep. Porras, a Gen Z Republican, is warning his state to be ready. Some of his constituents also know a thing or two about socialism, with many Cubans, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans fleeing socialist dictatorships over the past several decades.

The House Republican indicated that Florida could be the one to halt the movement in its tracks before it's too late.

"Florida must be the firewall. Miami knows what socialism does," Porras wrote. "Families here fled nations that promised equality and delivered poverty. We will not let that happen in America."

Miami-Dade County, which is about 70% Hispanic, voted for Donald Trump, a Republican, in the 2024 presidential election. Notably, it was the first time the county went for the GOP since 1988 with George H.W. Bush.

Gov. Ron DeSantis also won Miami-Dade in his 2022 reelection bid.

Porras is looking to keep it that way moving forward with conservative values, and he wants to turn off the faucet of socialism entering the Sunshine State.

"My mission is clear. Strengthen the Republican Party by defending faith, freedom, and opportunity," Porras wrote. "Florida’s Hispanic community is key to keeping our state free and our nation strong. I stand with President @RealDonaldTrump. I stand for America First."
