President Joe Biden (D), who’s steered clear from campaigning on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris (D), stirred some controversy this week. Responding to Tony Hinchcliffe’s controversial Puerto Rico joke at Madison Square Garden, President Biden called Trump supporters “garbage.” With 6 days until election day, President Donald Trump (R) is defending his supporters, calling them “higher quality.”

President Joe Biden took part in an interview with CNN this week. When asked to share his thoughts about President Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden, the president denounced Hinchcliffe's joke while also commenting that "the only garbage I see floatin' out there is his supporters."

The comment has generated controversy and directed criticism at the Harris-Walz ticket as pundits are likening it to Secretary Hillary Clinton's (D) "basket of deplorables" comment that contributed to her 2016 presidential election loss.

During a rally at Rocky Mount, North Carolina today, President Trump responded to President Biden's comment, criticizing the incumbent president and saying that Trump supporters "are far higher quality."

Vice President Harris was asked about President Biden's comment, and she shared that she had spoken to President Biden after he made the comment, but they did not talk about it because it "didn't come up" in their conversation. The vice president has not addressed the comment, and President Trump argued at his rally that this disqualified her from the presidency.

“You can’t be president if you hate the American people," President Trump told his audience in North Carolina. “You’re superior people. Not garbage.”

On social media, President Biden clarified his statement, writing that he was referring to "the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage - which is the only word I can think of to describe it." "His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say."
