Democrats and Republicans are harnessing the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v Wade to galvanize voters ahead of the November elections.
Two years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled in Dobbs v Jackson that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion,” and returned the right to regulate abortion back to the states.
Since then, many states have enacted laws protecting the unborn at earlier stages of life than was possible under the Roe regime.
Other states responded to Dobbs by amending their constitutions to include the right to an abortion.
Democrats have used abortion as a key issue on which to attack Republicans.
US Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) took to social media to allege supporters of President Donald Trump seek to install a national ban on abortion.
”It's been 2 years since Dobbs and even more Americans want to protect abortion rights. Yet MAGA extremists want a nationwide ban,” said Schultz.
Conversely, Republicans have used the anniversary to incite pro-life voters to continue supporting conservative candidates.
US Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) published a promotional video via X where he claimed that “without the right to life, none of the other rights matter.
Last week, Senator Rubio led a senate resolution outlining conservatives’ commitment “to protecting the unalienable right to life and guarding unborn lives against lethal violence.”
“I will always support the sanctity of life,” said Rubio. “This anniversary serves as a time to celebrate the great work that has been achieved by the pro-life movement and reaffirm our commitment to support families and protect the unborn.”
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign is reportedly using the two year anniversary to launch a major campaign effort focused on gaining pro-choice voters.
President Biden’s campaign is hosting events across the country this week and Biden is expected to bring up the issue this Thursday during his presidential debate with former President Donald Trump.
