Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL) has certainly not been shy to address the southern border during her time as an elected Congresswoman. From sponsoring legislation addressing human trafficking and drug trafficking to calling for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign, Rep. Cammack always seems to be engaged on the issue.
Now, Rep. Cammack is introducing the Protect Our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act of 2023.
Cosponsors of her bill are Representatives Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Chris Smith (R-NJ), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), Dan Bishop (R-NC), and Dan Meuser (R-PA).
The bill looks to “explicitly state that assaulting a law enforcement officer is a deportable offense.” It comes at a time just after a female Border Patrol agent was assaulted while attempting to arrest a non-citizen of the United States. She was injured in the attack and has received medical treatment.
“I am proud to support the POLICE Act, which would make assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense. I want to thank my friend Rep. Garbarino for introducing this bill to provide this much-needed update to our immigration laws," said Rep. Cammack.
Rep. Garbarino included a statement as well regarding the introduction of the legislation.
"As the Biden Border Crisis rages on, I have serious concerns about the ramifications for law enforcement officers who are on the front lines dealing with migrants," said Rep. Garbarino.
He would go on to mention that "Whether on Long Island or at the southern border, there should be no ambiguity that assaulting a police officer is a deportable offense for non-citizens. The POLICE Act would ensure that we can hold criminals accountable for violence against law enforcement officers who are simply doing their jobs."
In October, Rep. Cammack said that the Biden administration has reduced Border Patrol agents to “glorified babysitters” due to no fault of their own.
“The men and women protecting this nation are basically turned into glorified babysitters and processing papers. It’s just obnoxiously disrespectful…They have signed up to defend our nation’s borders and be that front line, and yet they are just processing people and catching and releasing per the policy of the Joe Biden administration,” stated Cammack.
