The Treasury Department teamed up with Senate Democrats to conceive of a plan that would allow the Internal Revenue Service to access the information of bank accounts that had a minimum of $600 in withdrawals or annual deposits. The plan received pushback from Republicans and fiscally conservative groups, but now Democrats have responded by instead raising the threshold from $600 to $10,000. In response, as with a number of policies that the Biden administration has implemented, GOP members are speaking out, calling the IRS’ measure “a complete violation of due process.”
According to Just the News, the new proposal aims “to enable the IRS and Treasury to better identify wealthy tax evaders, which in turn will assist congressional Democrats and the Biden administration to pay for the proposed trillion-dollar spending plans of which it is a part.”
While Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has remained quiet over her thoughts regarding the policy, GOP attorneys general from more than a dozen states have directed a letter to both Yellen and President Biden, saying that the plan is “unacceptable, illegal and contrary to the well-founded constitutional principles against illegal searches and seizures.”
On Twitter, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) slammed the measure, commenting that “the IRS must never have access to the bank account of any American” because “this is a complete violation of due process, and treats all Americans as guilty before proven innocent!”

Donalds added that “a $10k threshold catches anyone who receives or transfers $834 a month.”
For Donalds, the idea of the IRS being able to do this would be “crazy.”
As well, Rep. Kat Cammack (R) took to Twitter to further criticize the Biden administration, accusing it of “rising prices and empty shelves.”

In calling for better representation in Washington, Cammack lamented that “we deserve better.”
