South Florida’s “drug czar” and Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg has endorsed Lauren Baer in her congressional race to unseat freshman U.S. Rep. Brian Mast (R).
In a campaign statement, Baer posted Aronberg’s endorsement:
“Our community is facing many challenges. From the opioid epidemic to threats to our environment, we need a representative in Washington who will seek common sense solutions — and actually accomplish them. I am proud to endorse Lauren Baer, who has the experience of bringing people together in these divisive political times.”
Mast faces a primary race, and should win re-election, but all bets are off in the general election where the U.S. Army veteran could face a tougher challenge.
Mast’s biggest challenge could be energizing his 2nd Amendment base of support, who feel betrayed after the freshman congressman called for a ban on assault weapons after the Parkland school shooting.
Some of Mast’s grassroots supports have even gone as far as to try to field a primary challenger against him.
On the Democratic side, Baer must first get past Navy veteran Pam Keith before she can take on Mast.
