Castor Urges Reinstatement of Assistant Attorney Prosecuting St. Pete Embezzler

Representative Kathy Castor (D-FL) recently urged the reinstatement of Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gordon in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who had been leading the prosecution of Leo Govoni, who is accused of embezzling from medical trust funds.

As WFLA described, Govoni and his accountant, John Witeck, were arrested and indicted in late June on accusations of stealing over $100 million from special needs trusts meant to help disabled people and their families.

Govnoi and Witeck have been indicted on 15 grand jury charges, including conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, bank fraud, illegal monetary transactions, and false bankruptcy declaration.

U.S. Attorney Michael Gordon, who previously served as a prosecutor for January 6th defendants, was assigned to act as the lead prosecutor for Govoni. Still, no connection between the two events has been specified.

Nevertheless, Rep. Castor said in her letter that "The timing and circumstances of Mr. Gordon's termination raise serious concerns about political retribution and threaten to derail justice for victims who have already suffered for far too long."

Rep. Castor continued to push the narrative, saying, "Equally alarming is the dismissal of a highly regarded Department of Justice prosecutor for purely politically vindictive reasons."

"I respectfully request that you stand up for the victims of the Govoni crimes, reinstate Mr. Gordon immediately, and allow the prosecution of Leo Govoni to proceed unimpeded," the Florida Congresswoman concluded. "The victims deserve closure, and the public deserves a justice system free from intimidation and partisan retribution."

In March, Castor introduced a bill dealing with fraudulent insurance brokers, which establishes criminal penalties for insurance brokers who perform fraudulent activities such as changing a healthcare plan without a customer's knowledge or consent, including via the establishment of a consent verification and updates to the insurance plan system and target vulnerable groups via deceptive advertising practices.
