Steube Introduces Bill to Rename Washington DC Transit Authority

Share

Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) is introducing legislation to rename the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to the Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access (WMAGA).

Additionally, Rep. Steube's bill requires that the Washington, D.C., Metrorail system be renamed the "Trump Train." It will block all federal funding to the system until both requirements are met, arguing that the name change promotes greater responsibility and accountability for its operators.

"WMATA has received billions in federal assistance over the years and continues to face operational, safety, and fiscal challenges," said Rep. Steube in his press release, adding, "In the spirit of DOGE, this bill demands accountability by conditioning federal funding on reforms that signal a cultural shift away from bureaucratic stagnation toward public-facing excellence and patriotism."

Moreover, the Florida Congressman suggested that "Like any struggling institution, WMATA needs a fresh identity that aligns with efficiency, service quality, and renewed public trust. These new names serve as a bold rallying point for much-needed reform."

"With Washington, D.C., preparing to host major global events such as the FIFA World Cup and the 2027 NFL Draft, our capital's transit system must meet the highest standards," Steube continued. "The American people expect modern, reliable, and well-managed public services in their nation's capital. This bill leverages federal funding to ensure the transit system earns the right to represent the nation on the world stage."

Last April, Representative Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), along with Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and former Representative Mike Waltz (R-FL), introduced similar legislation to rename the Dulles International Airport in the Capital to Trump International Airport, saying, "As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing 'Welcome to Trump International Airport' as they land on American soil."

Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), in a bit of trolling, introduced a "counter-bill" to rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution after Trump instead.
