Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the Trump administration will target "foreign officials and persons" who look to restrict Americans' "free speech rights," stating that a new "visa restriction policy" will be put into place.
"For too long, Americans have been fined, harassed, and even charged by foreign authorities for exercising their free speech rights. Today, I am announcing a new visa restriction policy that will apply to foreign officials and persons who are complicit in censoring Americans. Free speech is essential to the American way of life – a birthright over which foreign governments have no authority," states Secretary Rubio.
Secretary Rubio's remark comes on the heels of Senior Trump Advisor Jason Miller's recent comments in Budapest, Hungary, warning of the threat to free speech that the European Union poses, and announcing that President Donald Trump would soon me addressing free speech in the EU.
"We take for granted our First Amendment right... Other countries have no embedded right to freedom of speech. Free speech is something that President Trump will be addressing in the EU and the UK," stated Miller.
Miller was in town speaking at a EU-US Forum event just as CPAC Hungary 2025 kicked off.
Free Speech also took centerstage at the annual conservative conference.
Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki emphasized the suppression of Free Speech in the European Union.
"Free speech is suppressed, and someone is trying to gain absolute power. We see this all around Europe, therefore the European elections in June are crucial. If conservatives do not gain power, there will be a huge pressure towards liberal oppression. A doctrine of political pragmatism and common sense, based on Christian values must prevail," said Mr. Morawiecki.
