Miami-Dade County flipped Republican in voter registration on Monday, marking a historic first in an area considered once safe for Democrats.
According to a release from the Republican Party of Florida, there are 464,370 registered Republicans (34%) to 440,790 (32.27%) Democrats in Miami-Dade. Possibly even more shocking, independents also outregister democrats in the county by about 20,000.
"The red wave has officially swept Miami-Dade," the release said.
Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power also celebrated the historic news.
“This is a total repudiation of the Democrats’ failed agenda. Miami-Dade is no longer their safe haven—it’s the beating heart of the Republican revolution,” Power said. “We’re the party of hardworking families, Hispanic patriots, and communities demanding safe streets, top-notch schools, and a booming economy. Miami-Dade proves the unstoppable momentum of the Republican message.”
Specifically, Republicans' net gain comes after the county completed its off-year voter roll maintenance, scrapping 172,747 voters from its active rolls. The change netted the GOP more than 38,000 votes compared to Democrats.
The flip also came pretty fast.
Last month, Democrats held a slight lead over Republicans in Miami-Dade. However, the flip might have been inevitable after the GOP dominated November's election.
In addition, the Florida GOP credited Miami-Dade lawmakers, including Reps. Juan Porras (R-Miami) and Alex Rizo (R-Hialeah), for the flip. They also mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Miami area native, and Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Miami-Dade is the largest county by population in Florida. It is also about 70% Hispanic.
“From Marco Rubio’s early victories to Ron DeSantis’s bold leadership, from Donald Trump’s commanding wins to our fearless donors and grassroots fighters, this is a victory for every Republican who refused to let Miami-Dade stay blue,” Power added. “Miami-Dade is now a blazing red fortress, and we’re charging toward an even brighter future!”
Miami-Dade flipping red is the latest blow for Democrats. President Donald Trump won the county last fall, giving Republicans their first presidential victory in the county since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
For perspective, former President Joe Biden won Miami-Dade by 7 points in 2020. Hillary Clinton won it by 30 points in 2016.
Overall, Republicans lead Democrats in Florida by over 1.2 million registrations.
