DeSantis 'Highly Skeptical' About City of Miami's Plan to Cancel November Elections

Share

MIAMI — During a press conference announcing his support for upcoming legislation that he said he would sign into law, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was asked his opinion about the City of Miami Commission’s apparent plan to cancel its November elections and extend the terms of the current mayor and commissioners until 2026.

The governor appeared unaware of the move but didn’t mince words when responding.

“I’m highly skeptical of that plan,” DeSantis said with a smirk, questioning the motives behind the proposed change.

The Commission is scheduled to consider reforms like term limits and shifting elections to higher-turnout years — but those reforms appear tied to giving current officials an extra year in office, effectively turning four-year terms into five.

Is this truly about reform? Or just a political maneuver to delay accountability and cling to power?
