Debbie Mayfield
Republican Debbie Mayfield cruised to victory in the Senate District 19 Republican primary over three other GOP candidates on Tuesday night.
According to unofficial results, Debbie Mayfield secured over 60% of the vote. She will now face Democrat Vance Ahrens in the SD 19 special general election on June 10.
Mark Lightner III followed Mayfield in a distant second place with 16% of the vote. Tim Thomas received around 13% while Marcie Adkins had just under 10%.
Mayfield was likely the favorite going into Tuesday's result. For one, she was endorsed by Republican Sen. Rick Scott and currently represents House District 32 which covers part of Brevard County.
SD 19 also includes part of Brevard County, so Mayfield's name I.D. was essentially cemented out of the gate. Moreover, Mayfield's experience includes representing Senate District 17 from 2016 to 2024 and four terms in the House of Representatives in parts of the Treasure Coast from 2008 to 2016.
Mayfield was also endorsed by Senate President Ben Albritton, Sen. Jim Boyd (R-Bradenton), and Sen. Jay Trumbull (R-Panama City). She will officially resign from her House seat on June 9th.
Sen. Scott congratulated Mayfield on her victory Tuesday night.
The seat was previously held by Sen. Randy Fine, who officially resigned from SD 19 ahead of his Congressional District 6 special election. Sen. Fine defeated Democratic candidate Josh Weil in CD 6 on Tuesday night.
While winning on Tuesday, Mayfield's road to victory was anything but smooth.
In February, she won a legal battle at the Florida Supreme Court after ruling in her favor after the state tried to keep her from running for her old seat.
If past results are indication, Mayfield should be the clear favorite over Ahrens in June. Fine defeated Ahrens by about 19 points last November.
