The Broward County Fraternal Order of Police recently stated that it's standing by Sen. Jason Pizzo (I-Sunny Isles) despite his decision to leave the Democratic Party and register as an Independent.
"Our organization has never based endorsements on political party affiliations. Instead, we prioritize the character, integrity, and actions of individuals - especially their commitment to law enforcement and public safety," FOP District Director Andrew LaFramboise said. "Senator Pizzo has consistently demonstrated these qualities throughout his career."
Last week, Sen. Pizzo left the Democratic Party in a speech on the Senate floor.
The move could be another sign that Pizzo is running for Florida governor. While Republicans outregister Democrats by a wide margin, the state has many unaffiliated voters.
"His recent decision to become an Independent reflects his commitment to principled leadership over partisan politics. We respect and support his choice to prioritize the needs of his constituents and the state of Florida above party lines," LaFramboise said.
Pizzo is a former state prosecutor. Considered a moderate, he has been outspoken about tougher policies against illegal immigration, a main talking point of Republicans.
He has also pushed for tougher penalties against reckless drivers.
The Broward County Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) represents over 3,200 police officers in the county. In reaffirming their support, the FOP called Pizzo a "reliable ally" to law enforcement and its community.
"The Broward County Fraternal Order of Police has proudly supported Senator Pizzo during his tenure as a Democrat and will continue to do so as he serves as an independent. Our endorsement has always been - and will continue to be - rooted in unwavering support for law enforcement and his dedication to public service," LaFramboise said.
"We look forward to continuing our partnership with Senator Pizzo in working to protect and strengthen our communities," LaFramboise added.
