Texas Rep. Self Addresses Transgender Rep. McBride as 'Mr.', Chaos Ensues

The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe witnessed a very quick hearing after Chairman Keith Self (R-TX) introduced transgender Representative Sarah McBride (D-DE) as "Mr. McBride," causing the hearing to descend into chaos.

Upon referring to Rep. McBride as a man, the Delaware legislator referred to Rep. Self as "Madam Chair," and Representative Bill Keating (D-MA) immediately interrupted Rep. Self and asked him to repeat himself.

Rep. Self responded by saying, "Yes, we have set the standard on the floor of the House," and then introduced McBride as a man once again.

Rep. Keating then blew up at Self, describing him as "out of order" and "not decent."

Self then said he would continue the meeting, and Keating said he would not continue the meeting unless McBride, a "duly elected Representative," was introduced the proper way.

Self then gaveled out of the meeting.

He also responded to the virality of the incident on social media.

"It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female," said Self.

This is not the first time that Rep. McBride has been a part of controversy.

In November, Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution to bar transgender people at the Capitol from using single-sex facilities opposite of their assigned gender at birth, following the election of McBride.

Following the introduction of Rep. Mace's bill, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced that he supported protecting “women’s only spaces" in the Capitol.

“All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings – such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms – are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” said Speaker Johnson. “It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol.”

President Donald Trump (R) also signed an executive order declaring that there are only two federally recognized genders in the United States.

It appears it is these two instances that provided the rationale for Rep. Self's introduction of McBride on Tuesday.
