US Military Rescues Iranian Sailors as US-Iran Tensions Flare

Share

The US military has reportedly rescued mariners from Iran who emitted a distress call after their ship began to sink in the Arabian gulf.

The Iranian-flagged M/V SHAYESTEH’s crew contained five Iranian and two Indian mariners who were all taken aboard the USCGC CLARENCE SUTPHIN JR to receive medical care.

The SHAYESTEH reportedly sunk after all its mariners were safely on board American ships.

“Great work today by personnel aboard the U.S. Navy ship USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6) and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) CLARENCE SUTPHIN JR (WPC 1147) in the Arabian Gulf,” reads a US Central Command (CENTCOM) statement

The rescue comes amidst flaring tensions between the US and Iran over the latter’s nuclear missile program.

President Donald Trump recently officially initiated a “maximum pressure campaign” to deter Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

“Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon,” reads an executive order that mandates for the federal government to exploit all legal, financial, and diplomatic avenues to frustrate Iran’s goals of possessing a nuclear weapon.

Despite the tensions, however, this is not the first time a rescue of Iranians occurs, as the US military has previously rescued other Iranian sailors suffering similar situations.

Last August, CENTCOM reported that the US Navy rescued several Iranian mariners whose ship had also been sinking.

Paradoxically, such Navy ships rescued the Iranian civilians while actively fighting Iranian-backed Houthi and Al-Qaeda terrorists.

While Houthi forces have not recently committed any aggressive acts, they have previously executed drone attacks against ships believed to have direct or indirect links to the US, Israel, or any of their allies since Hamas’ October 7th attacks.

Given a third of the global container shipping trade traverses the region targeted by the Houthis, their strikes have increased shipping costs, consequently raising prices for consumers.
