Did you know that genetically modified (GM) seeds could lead to a possible produce trade war with Communist China?
American lawmakers have been gradually sounding the alarm about the growing threat to the U.S. food supply.
China is an adversary and has been actively trying to undermine U.S. industries, including the agriculture sector by selling cheap produce around the world that directly and unfairly competes with American produce.
President Donald Trump has promoted and championed the American farmer in his first term in office, and now that he has won reelection, the President is expected to pick up where he left off of his support for Americans buying American crops.
The Farm Bill in the House of Representatives has stalled as a result of House Democrats pushing for an increase of SNAP or “Food Stamps” to prior COVID-19 levels.
House Republicans have rebuked House Democrats, the Farm Bill appears to be shelved.
Rep. Ronny Jackson from Texas told The Floridian that he bill was slowly moving along.
Rep. Darren Soto (D), also recently told The Floridian that he was hopeful the Farm Bill would be addressed, but considering that a one-year waiver was granted, he doesn’t expect Congress to discuss it anytime soon.
With the one-year waiver, Congress will probably take its time now, unfortunately, which hurt literally thousands of farmers, growers, and ranchers across the area,” said Rep. Soto.
When asked about China’s push to solely develop its own GM seeds and refusing to buy U.S.-sedes, Rep. Soto warned of a possible trade war with China.
“We have to navigate this relationship carefully. They are a rival, and so as we are looking at various parts to this, potential tariffs, Tik Tok, and dealing with a possible trade war, I’m hopeful that we will see President Trump bring this in for a landing otherwise we’ll see prices spike again,” added Rep. Soto.
One of the largest voices of opposition to China and Americans buying any product from the Chinese is Florida Senator Rick Scott.
“So, the reality is, you should buy locally. Whatever you’re going to put in your body, you should buy locally. It’s healthier,” said Sen.Scott.
