WASHINGTON— When former President Joe Biden signed an executive order to remove Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, both congressional Democrats and Republicans openly opposed the order, including Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D).
Rep. Wasserman Schultz, who represents one of the largest Venezuelan communities in the country, told The Floridian she opposed the terror designation being lifted and that she believed the Cuban regime was still “engaged in terrorist activity.”
While the veteran congresswoman has opposed Republicans on virtually every legislative issue and is an outspoken detractor of President Donald Trump, Rep. Wasserman Schultz has been unified with her Republican colleagues in opposition against the criminal regimes in Cuba and Venezuela.
There is a very tight bond between South Florida congressional lawmakers regarding the plight of the Cuban and Venezuelan people.
“I opposed the decision to remove them. I’m glad that it’s been reinstated because they are engaged in terrorist activity,” Rep. Wasserman Schultz stated. “They are part of the “Axis of Evil” with Iran, Russia, and Hezbollah. They need to be labeled as a state’s sponsor of terrorism.”
During the interview, Rep. Wasserman Schultz was also asked about now-Secretary Rubio’s nomination to be, and subsequent confirmation as Secretary of State of the United States, where she hoped that the Trump administration would respect and adopt Secretary Rubio’s knowledgeable foreign policy opinions.
“I have had a good working relationship with now Secretary Rubio, for years, and we share very similar positions on Venezuela and Cuba,” added Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “And I’m hopeful that Rubio’s opinion is considered and adopted when it comes to policy in Latin America.
"I opposed the decision to remove them. I’m glad that it’s been reinstated because they are engaged in terrorist activity. They are part of the “Axis of Evil” with Iran and Russia, and Hezbollah. They need to be labeled as state’s sponsor of terrorism," Wasserman Schultz said.
Days before President Donald Trump took office and reinstated the terrorist designation against Cuba, House Lawmakers led by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar introduced the “The Fighting Oppression until the Reign of Castro Ends, or FORCE ACT,” to counter Biden’s executive edict.
Florida Reps. Carlos Giménez (R), John Rutherford (R), Cory Mills (R), Mario Díaz-Balart (R), and Scott Franklin (R) cosponsored the bill.
With Secretary Rubio, who is Cuban-American and in line with the plight of the exiled Cuban diaspora leading the State Department, leading the State Department, President Donald Trump is expected to tighten the political and economic nurses around the necks of those controlling both Cuba and Venezuela.
