Mills Talks Ambitions to Replace Rubio, 'We Need Real Strength in Senate'

Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) discussed his ambitions to fill the departing Senator Marco Rubio's (R-FL) Senate seat in a recent appearance on Fox and Friends First, saying, "What we need is real strength in the Senate."

Rep. Mills revealed that he had spoken over the phone with Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) about taking the position, telling host Carley Shimkus that "Florida needs strong leadership and, especially there in the Senate, but also to help with President Trump's agenda."

He "expressed concern over an appointment that potentially would not meet that requirement, and so I expressed my interest in that position."

The Florida Congressman described the conversation as covering border security, H1B visas, economic growth strategies, restoration of the Everglades, and "kind of a wide array of different things as well as, including justice appointments and confirmations."

Shimkus asked Rep. Mills why he wanted to run for Rubio's Senate seat, and he answered, saying, "Right now, we have got a great House [of Representatives]. We have great leadership there, and we have a Speaker who has continued to drive forward. I think what we are lacking right now is to continue to have that constitutional conservative there in the Senate who will actually continue to hold its values and principles, but also, we need fighters in the Senate."

Moreover, he suggested that because "we have got people who have been there for 20, 30, and 40 years, we need people who are coming in with a fresh perspective, who understand what this country needs right now and understands President Trump's agenda, and so I think right now, what we need is real strength in the Senate."

Politico reported that Gov. DeSantis has not yet decided on who will replace Rubio, but Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is currently a strong contender to serve for two years until 2026. the 2026 winner will then serve until 2028, and Mills intends to run in 2026.
