City of Coral Gables manager Amos Rojas appears to be on the verge of resigning. Apparently, managing a city the size of Coral Gables was too much for him.
As one Cuban-American voter recently said, “he's outgrown the suit.”
A source within the local municipality told The Floridian of the potential resignation and said that the announcement is being made next Tuesday during the city council meeting.
Rojas was hired less than a year ago during a commission meeting without public notice or public participation.
Did the City of Coral Gables hire someone who appeared to be lacking both the qualifications and experience necessary to effectively manage a municipality?
It is important to remember that Commissioner Kirk Menendez began the process of firing the previous administrator and then supporting the appointment of Rojas.
Rojas’ appointment has raised serious concerns about the transparency and accountability of his decision-making to the residents of the city.
Rojas’ hiring may have violated Florida's Sunshine Laws during the vote that led to Rojas' appointment as city manager. These laws exist to ensure open government and public trust, but the circumstances surrounding Rojas' appointment last year leave us to believe that some of the commissioners may have violated those principles.
Lack of qualifications and experience in managing anything, let alone a city the size of Coral Gables, didn't stop Menendez from giving Rojas a pay raise - after giving himself a 101% pay raise, of course.
As city manager, Rojas earns a salary of more than $1,000 a day, a figure that is 20% higher than what was earned by the previous manager, who, no doubt, was more qualified.
Tuesday's meeting because it is rumored that instead of starting a new process to find a qualified person to replace Rojas, Menendez is considering handpicking another administrator that same day.
Rojas could not be reached for comment and did not respond to a request for written comment.
