After Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) strongly endorsed former RNC Co-Chair Lara Trump to replace Senator Marco Rubio, three more Republican members of Congress from Florida have expressed their support for Mrs. Trump to replace the soon-to-be former senior senator from the state.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is tasked to appoint someone to fill Sen. Rubio's senatorial shoes, and with Mrs. Trump resigning her post at the Republican National Committee (RNC), could her appointment to the U.S. Senate be a done deal?
“We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting,” DeSantis stated in a post on the social platform X. “More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January,” he continued.
Two of those "possible candidates" are Rep. Cory Mills and State Senator Jay Collins
Moreover, Rep. Gimenez also told The Floridian that he believed Mrs. Trump was a "good choice" to replace Rubio.
“I like Lara Trump, I think she’d be a good choice, but it’s all up to the governor to decide. So, if he picks Lara Trump, I have no problem with that.," said Rep. Gimenez shortly before legislators voted this past Wednesday.
Finally, Rep. Luna added that the Senate needs “an incredible messenger,” and that Trump fits the mold.
“She’s actually an incredible messenger, and I think the Senate needs that right now. As you’re seeing, there’s more and more young people coming over to the Republican Party, and she’s done an outstanding job being able to recruit but also connect with voters that typically wouldn’t be high propensity turn out voters for the Republican Party,” said Rep. Luna.
She continued by mentioning Trump’s achievements, including her time as a Fox News contributor.
“I think that sharing the Republican message, not to mention she actually has a great understanding of foreign policy and politics because of what she’s done not just in Trump’s orbit but also in her own. She was a great commentator. She’s done some great stuff. I think that she’s the whole package,” concluded Luna.
As Rep. Gimenez mentioned, this decision is ultimately up to Gov. DeSantis.
DeSantis is expected to announce Rubio's replacement sometime in late January 2025.
