Op-Ed Calls on Congress to Disqualify Trump

Share

In a twist of events that has left conservatives scratching their heads, The Hill published an op-ed this week calling for Congress to block President-elect Donald Trump (R) from assuming the presidency. In the op-ed, the columnists call for Congress to invoke the 14th Amendment to disqualify the president-elect from taking office in January. Responding to the article, Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) dismissed the article, assuring the president-elect will get confirmed.

The article, written by Evan A. Davis and David M. Schulte, has received criticism for calling on Congress to reject the electoral vote using the Electoral Count Act, which would allow for an objection if “the electors from a state were not lawfully certified or if the vote of one or more electors was not ‘regularly given.’”

The writers disqualify President-elect Trump after the attack on the Capitol on January 6th, calling him “an oath-breaking insurrectionist.”

Responding to the article, Rep. Crenshaw dismisses the writers’ argument, explaining that it’s based “on a very specious interpretation of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.”

The Texas Republican went on to say that “Trump is not an insurrectionist nor did he engage in rebellion nor did he aid our enemies.” Rep. Crenshaw also said that the rioters who stormed the Capitol were not insurrectionists. Instead, “they were mad and things got way out of hand” according to Rep. Crenshaw.

“This kind of thinking is symptomatic of a larger false narrative that plagues our public discourse, which is the idea that Congress has any power to invalidate an election,” he explained, adding that “the role of the Congress is purely ceremonial, and disputes over electors must be settled by the States, or in some cases the courts.”

Rep. Luna also responded to the article, suggesting that the idea of President-elect Trump not getting confirmed is a pipe dream.

“This will not happen. He is getting confirmed,” she wrote on X.
