Marco Rubio's Son, Anthony, Scores First Collegiate Touchdown for UF in Bowl Game

Share

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has had quite the year. He was deep in the running to be President-elect Donald Trump's (R) Vice presidential pick and helped him get elected; he was selected to be President-elect Trump's next Secretary of State, and his son, Anthony Rubio, scored a touchdown against the Tulane Green Wave for the Florida Gators in their bowl game in Tampa.

Yes, you read that right. Sen. Rubio's son, Anthony, scored a touchdown for Sen. Rubio's alma mater, the University of Florida.

He signed with the Orange and Blue in January 2023 and received his first carry in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl on Friday. Rubio ended the night with six carries for 32 yards and a touchdown. He scored on a nine-yard scamper with about a minute left in the game. The Gators won 33-8.

"Happy my son scored. But what I am truly proud of is the joy from his teammates and that he gave all the glory to God. #GoGators" Rubio said.

Anthony Rubio was a stand-out football player at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami-Dade County. During his high school football career, Rubio racked up 1474 rushing yards in 229 games, scoring a total of 15 touchdowns.

Florida head coach Billy Napier didn't address Rubio's touchdown, but he did address the Gators' impressive end to their season as they finished with four straight wins, bringing their final record to 8-5.

“When you are in a leadership position you are only as good as the people you surround yourself with. After our first month, I am really proud of how the coaches and players collaborated to get us back on course. It could have easily gone sideways after the start of the season, but we got confidence and belief and felt we could play with anyone over the last half of the season,” said Napier.

Anthony Rubio joined the squad as a preferred walk-on. If he keeps churning out performances such as these, he could earn a scholarship in the future.
