Doral Mayor Responds to 90 Day Incinerator Deferral Request

Share

This week, the future of Miami-Dade County's waste-to-energy (WTE) incinerator was set to be determined. However, a 90-day deferral request has been made to discuss the WTE incinerator. The incinerator has been at the center of controversy as Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has suggested that the incinerator stay in Doral, but the suggestion has drawn a divisive response.

Originally, the incinerator was scheduled to be discussed at a meeting this Tuesday. However, Doral Mayor Christi Fraga announced that a 90-day deferral request was made to discuss the future of the incinerator.

The Doral mayor has strongly opposed keeping the incinerator in her city, and she has dedicated the last two years to pushing for its relocation. Miami-Dade County Mayor Cava instead believes that the incinerator should remain in place.

Mayor Fraga argues that Doral's growing population would make the incinerator unsuitable for Doral, and she instead believes that the incinerator should move to the West Airport site, arguing that it would be better equipped to handle the facility.

The incinerator is currently sitting on a 40-acre site in Doral, and the proposed area would span 400 acres.

On social media, Mayor Fraga announced the deferral request, projecting that it would be granted to allow more time to discuss the incinerator. This comes after she released a statement on November 22nd on the matter.

"The united efforts of our community, including input from community leaders and organizations like Trump National Doral, have put significant pressure on the County Mayor to reconsider her recommendation and proposal," Mayor Fraga wrote on social media. "This demonstrates our city's strength and determination to protect the health, quality of life, and future of all who live, work, and enjoy Doral," she added.

Mayor Fraga has aggressively campaigned on social media against keeping the incinerator in Doral. Most recently, she released a video on Instagram alongside social media influencers, affirming "not in our backyard."
