After the 2024 presidential election, the Democratic Party has entered the stage of rebranding. The party is looking for a viable candidate to lead the party in the 2028 presidential election, and Democrats are mobilizing to respond to the significant losses in the November election. One progressive candidate who’s hoping to inject some youth into the party is David Hogg, who announced this week that he’s running for Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
The 24-year-old made headlines after surviving the Parkland school shooting and subsequently co-founding the March for our Lives, a student-led organizations that led demonstrations in support of gun control legislation.
Hogg, a gun control activist, spoke to ABC News about his political aspirations, commenting that “this role is a great way of, for me, bringing newer voices into the Democratic Party.”
“I just want to be one of several of those voices to help represent young people and also, more than anything, make sure that we’re standing up to the consulting class that increasingly the Democratic Party is representing instead of the working class,” Hogg added.
Last year, Hogg created the progressive Leaders We Deserve PAC, which aims to elect younger lawmakers. Leading up to the November election, he was a staunch supporter of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s (D) vice presidential candidacy.
President Donald Trump’s (R) decisive victory in the November election showed that voters have become disappointed in the Democratic Party. This led to the president-elect performing better than he did in the two previous elections.
Responding to the exit polls, Hogg has shared that he wants to focus on reclaiming the young voters that have shifted from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.
“Moving forward, we must have a renewed focus on our youth outreach in all states and territories to rebuild our coalition after the massive shift to the right among young voters this election,” Hogg said in a statement.
