Fired FEMA Worker Blows the Whistle on NC, GA Controversy

Share

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to stir controversy, which has led to bipartisan condemnation. Earlier this month, a FEMA supervisor was fired for allegedly instructing staff to avoid hurricane affected homes that had Trump signs. In a new interview, the former FEMA employee shared that FEMA staff were also urged to avoid homes with Trump signs in North Carolina and Georgia.

Marn'i Washington, the former FEMA employee, appeared on Fox News this week to further comment on the FEMA controversy. In the interview, Washington shared that FEMA staff were urged to avoid the homes with Trump signs because of "safety precautions."

"If you have loose dogs, and someone on the team is comfortable with dogs and another person is not, we can't go to that home because of safety precautions," Washington explained. She went on to note that FEMA has "incident reports" that back the need for the policy, commenting that "the passionate supporters for Trump, some of them were a little bit violent."

The policy and the response from Washington has drawn bipartisan condemnation. Earlier this week, Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D) denounced the policy, saying that "this sort of stuff feeds into the worst things that people think about government in general."

Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) has called for "accountability" regarding the controversy, and he has joined over 50 Republican congressional members in sending a letter to Deanne Criswell, the FEMA Administrator.

In the letter, the GOP lawmakers express that "such blatant discrimination is a sever breach of FEMA's duty to serve all Americans impartially, especially in times of disaster when people's lives and livelihood are at stake."

Calling the policy "alarming and unacceptable," the lawmakers go on to argue that "this conduct erodes public trust and undermines FEMA's mission to deliver unbiased and effective aid."
