Heading into the 2024 presidential election, Democrats were energized. From celebrity appearances to campaigning on abortion access, Democrats felt good about the election. However, as Election Night progressed, it was clear that Democrats wouldn't be riding the blue wave across the finish line. Responding to the election of President Donald Trump (R), Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani (D) warned that "fascism and extremism will continue to rise."
Rep. Eskamani coasted to the finish line last night, and though she's celebrating her reelection victory, the Florida Democrat is lamenting the influence Republicans have gained in the 2024 election.
On social media, she shared that the United States "sent a criminal with no plan except Project 2025 back [to] the White House" instead of voting for "one of the most qualified presidential candidates we've ever seen." She then urged her followers to become involved in the political process, arguing that "we need to be ready to protect one another and especially our marginalized communities." Why, you might ask? Because "fascism and extremism will continue to rise in American, with states like Florida serving as far-right laboratories."
On Instagram live, Rep. Eskamani continued the conversation with her followers, warning that "we need to be prepared for anything."
Reflecting on the election results, she cited that Democrats struggled with the "inability to communicate to voters." For example, she discussed the use of social media, noting that "not enough people do this."
Though Democrats like New-York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (R) frequently use social media to speak to constituents and discuss the political process with voters, Rep. Eskamani noted that Democrats need to become more engaged in this capacity to get their message out.
"It's so important to develop platforms for every day people to express themselves... we don't have that infrastructure," she commented. On social media, she further warned that this election was worse than the 2016 election and that voters should prepare "to fight back."
