Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has sent a letter to U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Attorney General Merrick Garland regarding the anti-Israel group "Unity of Fields." This group, according to Sen. Rubio, should be investigated as a possible domestic terrorist organization as it has aligned and declared its allegiance toward other groups such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Houthis, and others.
Sen. Rubio's office said this of Unity of Fields in his letter to AG Garland:
"As you may know, Unity of Fields is an 'anti-Zionist "direct action network"' focused on promoting acts of violence and protest against individuals or organizations that the group considers supportive of Israel, Zionism, or American imperialism ... Specifically, the group calls for increased escalation in its activities, including no longer disavowing any action in pursuit of its Marxist, anti-Zionist, anti-American agenda, building up militancy infrastructure, and adherence to the belief that the 'revolution will come within our lifetimes' as they 'will make sure of it,'" said the Florida Senator.
After sharing some of the allusions to violence that Unity of Fields has demonstrated, Rubio later establishes his request for a domestic terrorism investigation against the group.
"Under 18 U.S. Code § 2331, 'domestic terrorism' is defined as any activity which 'involves acts dangerous to human life that are in violation of the criminal laws' and includes the intent 'to intimidate or coerce a civilian population' or “to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion,'" said Rubio.
He also shared Unity of Fields' claims of affiliation with Middle Eastern terrorist groups that have waged war on Israel and have combatted with U.S. forces in the past.
"Unity of Fields have been outspoken in transitioning into a militant propaganda organization and have cited Houthi Ansar Allah saying, '[t]he meaning of the unity of the fields is that we are all one hand, one leadership, one direction, one goal, and one approach, and any attack on any of the components of the Axis [including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Houthis, and various Shi’ite groups in Iraq and Syria] is considered a direct attack on us,'" said Rubio.
Finally, Rubio concludes his letter by saying that Unity of Fields "underpins" our Constitution and "endangers citizens" of the United States.
